“The most interesting people I know didn’t know what they wanted to do with their lives at 22”. Baz Luhrman’s song “Everybody’s free” contains a lot more truth than one might think. At least, it does for me. When I was 27, I decided to turn my life around and pursue my dream of being a full-time photographer. Not your average photographer.[/text_block]
I’m Nicolas Sonnet, I live in Mortsel (Belgium), and I’m a full-time fashion photographer. professionally speaking, I started about 2 years ago, but photography has been present throughout my entire life. Take for instance my grandfather. He was a photographer, too. As a kid, I used to experiment with cameras and film – much to my parent’s despair (all that wasted film and underexposed photos!).
As I’ve said before, I only recently decided to tune my life in favour of what used to be a hobby. My biggest accomplishment so far is without a doubt the “Playing with Light” project, through which I’ve taught chronically ill children to photograph. I started my work on this project when I had first started my own business. Before I knew it, I had the full support of Nikon and the Antwerp University Hospital. In the end, their works were even exhibited in the FOMU, Belgium’s largest photography museum. As far as publications go, my photos have appeared in Collection Magazine, an Arab luxury magazine available throughout the entire world, which make me lucky to collaborate with studios that left me new perspectives and help me to put my own spark of stylisation in portraiture.
As far as my hobbies go: I travel a lot, always with camera in hand to discover the world. This is something that inspires me. I love listening to music whenever I can, wherever I can. It brings peace to my mind and also has an inspiring effect on me. It moves me emotionally and it motivates me to push my limits. Cooking is another one of my favorite hobbies. In fact, for me shooting a good picture has a lot in common with cooking a good dish.
So here we are, two years in. Photography has become a way of living and my way of expressing myself. It’s all about the love of making others look amazing in their photo sessions. I like making people feel confident and comfortable. I mainly specialise in portrait and fashion photography. Personality and character are the cornerstones of my work. My mission is to search for a story in each picture, to be creative and unique in each shoot. I consider a photo more of a narrative than just a visual representation. This is both true for portrait works and fashion editorials. Just like every person has a unique personality, each fashion brand has a unique identity. In portraits, I strive to results that are both appealing to the eye and an honest representation of the individual in front of the lens. For fashion, I create compelling visuals that remain true to the spirit of the creative minds behind the clothes.
